Members of the small community of Uranga, in Western Kenya, don't have to walk long distances anymore to access healthcare. Now, they can visit St. Elizabeth Onding dispensary, which was inaugurated recently by local officials and the Sauri Millennium Village team. The villagers were so aware of the need for such a facility that one of them donated the plot where it was built, while others contributed with bricks and construction material.

A tender and loving moment between a mother and her young daughter, who is learning to discover the world. A sight like so many others. When I arrived to the Bonsaaso Millennium Villages Project (MVP) site, my first impressions regarding the status of healthcare delivery were above expectations: I was pleasantly surprised about the great work that MVP and the Ghana Health Service had carried out in this cluster. Storm clouds had been gathering all afternoon that Sunday. But no one in Mindhine expected the heavy downpour and strong winds that hit this Millennium Village last August. The roof of the health facility, covering six rooms that offer out-patient services, was blown off. The electricity line, kitchen and a pit latrine nearby were not spared either. At the time, the dispensary was being refurbished and expanded, and so construction materials like timber were damaged by water. Drugs and paper work were destroyed, iron sheets were blown away. Located in Western Kenya, Sauri was the first Millennium Village (MV) to see the light in 2005. Five years on, the project area has grown to nearly 70,000 people and has registered numerous successes in its multi-sectoral approach.
The MV team and the community celebrated this at the inauguration of new classrooms at the end of October 2010.

This year, Sauri Millennium Village, Western Kenya, marked the half-way point in the project. With five years of successful innovations and interesting challenges behind it, and five to go to the Millennium Development Goals deadline, our aim now is to strengthen our links with the local authorities and ensure that they will take our interventions on board, and pursue them beyond 2015.

Fifty farmers, including 10 women, from Sauri Millennium Village, Western Kenya, were trained in July on new concepts in water and agriculture management by a team from the Arava Institute of Environmental Studies. The training came as a result of a two year old collaboration between The MDG Centre and Mashav, Israel's National Agency for International Development Cooperation.
