Members of the small community of Uranga, in Western Kenya, don't have to walk long distances anymore to access healthcare. Now, they can visit St. Elizabeth Onding dispensary, which was inaugurated recently by local officials and the Sauri Millennium Village team. The villagers were so aware of the need for such a facility that one of them donated the plot where it was built, while others contributed with bricks and construction material.

Improving maternal health and encouraging expectant women to deliver at a health facility is a priority for the Millennium Villages Project (MVP). Several interventions are being implemented to boost institutional delivery. In Ruhiira, Uganda, only 8% of pregnant women delivered in a facility when the project first started. A little girl in a dark red dress runs around laughing. Her mother tries to catch her, before she trips on her ruffles and falls. Florence picks up Nicole and dries her tears. A tender and loving moment between a mother and her young daughter, who is learning to discover the world. A sight like so many others. When I arrived to the Bonsaaso Millennium Villages Project (MVP) site, my first impressions regarding the status of healthcare delivery were above expectations: I was pleasantly surprised about the great work that MVP and the Ghana Health Service had carried out in this cluster. I found 7 functional health centers, managed by midwives operating as doctors, assisted by a team of community health workers. The 7 clinics in the cluster . . . [more]
Storm clouds had been gathering all afternoon that Sunday. But no one in Mindhine expected the heavy downpour and strong winds that hit this Millennium Village last August. The roof of the health facility, covering six rooms that offer out-patient services, was blown off. The electricity line, kitchen and a pit latrine nearby were not spared either. At the time, the dispensary was being refurbished and expanded, and so construction materials like timber were damaged by water. Drugs and paper work were destroyed, iron sheets were blown away. Property worth approximately Ksh 450,000 ($5,600) was damaged. The only surviving building . . . [more]
