WFP Director hails the “revolution of hope” in Ruhiira

'Welcome visitors, welcome today, we've all been waiting so long!' Coming over the crest of the hill into the Millennium Village of Ruhiira, Uganda, children's singing voices gradually become louder, intermingled with bursts of clapping and laughter. The long-awaited visitor, Jeffrey Sachs, is due to arrive at any moment, and the anticipation is palpable. Sachs, Head . . . [more]

Millennium Promise Japan: Using sport to connect schoolchildren in Japan and Uganda

Through sports, we can connect without words, and it is upon this belief that Japan-based NGO Amitie was founded, and they use this idea as a means of realising their vision of promoting development and cross-cultural understanding. The main reason for Amitie's visit week was for them to inspect the Ryamiyonga Primary School which is due to soon be . . . [more]

Millennium Promise Japan: Connecting Japan and Uganda through Secondary Education Partnerships

Japan can feel like a very long way from Africa, and after 21 hours on a plane and a few delayed connections, this feeling certainly rung true for the delegation from Millennium Promise Japan who recently paid a visit to the Ruhiira Millennium Village in Uganda. And yet connection . . . [more]

Impatient for Action

Last Monday I had the pleasure of attending the Second Annual Millennium Promise Partners’ Meeting. It was brilliant. I have never been in a room with so many people I had only heard about, read articles by and watched lectures from online. Perhaps most wonderfully, everyone seemed impatient for action. The setup was great. It allowed for sharing of ideas and I think it would have been hard not to come away even more inspired and empowered. The level of innovation was phenomenal. World leaders, powerful calls to action from all spheres of society, . . . [more]

The Millennium Promise Partners’ Meeting, Obama & the MDG’s

This has been a terrific week for Millennium Promise, for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and – most importantly – for the hopes of communities and families living in extreme poverty around the world. On Wednesday, President Barack Obama gave his first address to the United Nations General Assembly. In conveying his administration's vision leading up to the major MDG-focused international summit scheduled for September 2010, he eloquently described the challenged current state of our global community: Far too many people in . . . Health care boosted by a special training in Ruhiira

Sounds of laughter intermingled with thumping feet and clapping hands ring across the room as community health workers (CHWs) in Ruhiira perform a traditional Baciga dance. Out of breath and energized, they take their seats in a large room with rows of wooden benches as Alex Kakama, one of the health facilitators, . . . [more]
