French Ambassador to Kenya Visits Dertu Village
On Monday, July 6th, the French ambassador to Kenya, Her Excellency Mrs. Elisabeth Barbier, visited the Dertu Millennium Village. She was accompanied by her husband, Mr. Avner Cohen and two embassy employees, Mr. Georges Deiner, counselor for cooperation and cultural affairs, and Ms. Pauline Wesolek, program manager. The visit came ahead of the launch of the Dertu Renewable Energy Project, a $250,000 project that will bring biogas and solar energy to Dertu. The MoU for the project will be signed on Friday at a public event followed by a press conference at the French Cultural Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
The French delegation’s visit included a stop at a school, a health clinic and a borehole as well as a baraza (public meeting) and lunch with village elders. The group was interested in all aspects of the MVP, and especially the integrated approach of the renewable energy project. The Ambassador was particularly touched to know that the maternity ward which she visited will soon receive power.
